Rough First Week

So this was week one of the quarter and MAN IT WAS ROUGH. I am only taking 12 credit hours (physiology, molecule genetics and research) but between that, studying for the MCAT and my student organization (which I am HEAVILY involved in), I’ve been feeling run down. Each day, I spend about 2 hours doing things for my student org, 3-4 hours in the lab, 3 hours in class then before I know it, it’s 5pm and I’m exhausted and have a bunch of chapter of MCAT studying to do. Jesus..

My research I do is for my honors research thesis and it is nutrition research, so the cool thing is, it is actually a really interesting project. I am studying how different micronutrients effect transfacted adipocytes (fat cells) in females and males. Different genes are tagged for fluroesense and if they are expressed with the addition of specific micronutrients, they will glow the certain color. The genes I am studying are genes for pathways of inflammation, themogenesis (fat loss), and lipid production (fat gain). However it is much more complex than that, and right now we are in the early process of selecting a good clone the expresses the genes we want it to–it’s taking forever!


Today, I had a good run! It was beautiful out…high fifties! Total mileage today was 5 miles 🙂

  • Mile 4: 9:01, 171bpm

Pretty pleased with that run! Now, if I can get myself to do some strength training that would be great. Currently I am cooling off lol


I did a few more workouts this week, and have found a KEY in keeping my energy higher during the days. I have class early in the mornings and some days I just don’t feel like eating breakfast. I started researching juices over break because I try not to drink my calories and honestly when I think of juice, I think of lots of sugars that will just spike my blood sugar and leave me famished after about an hour. However, I started finding some juices that also had vegetables that I usually don’t eat in my normal diet (like wheatgrass and sprirulla). So, I’ve been experiementing with juice! Sometimes, instead of breakfast I’ll drink a glass of juice while I’m getting ready. It’s soooo good and easy to drink while I’m doing my make up in the morning.


I also started using a meal planner to roughly plan my meals. It kind of worked, but needs a little work for next week. I just can’t tell you have many times I come home from the store and still feel like I have nothing to eat! Hah, so I found a cute template online and it separates the food into sections of the store for easy shopping 🙂 Love it!

LOL I eat more than is on there–usually a mid morning snack, afternoon snack and before bed snack too! 🙂


Well I’m off to clean my room and get ready to go out tonight. I am a busy girl, but I do need some down time with my friends at least once a week 🙂

Okay, so I have to post about The Bachelor tonight. I am CRAZY for this show, and have been since the very first one like 10 years ago. Hah, I remember being really young and watching it with my mom! Anyways, HELLO BEN.

Damn, he looked good tonight. I was trying to come up with reasons why he was so much more attractive tonight than he ever was on The Bachelorette. Here were a few possible ones:

  • Tan
  • He has a vineyard
  • All the women want him
  • He didn’t talk much LOL

In all seriousness, the show was MONOPOLIZED by the crazy women. Crazy blogger girl Jenna has to be put on there by ABC for ratings. I liked the girl from Tennessee…I can’t remember her name! My fascination in this show probably stems from my love in fairytales and happy endings. I know, what does The Bachelor and fairytales have in common? Well, in my opinion, this show is a giant, adult fairytale in that this is not real life or realistic. There are dream dates, beautiful settings, cameras, etc.

But it does have me wondering if the form of dates they go on is better than the kind of dating my generation does? Ben doesn’t communicate with the girls unless out on a date, but my generation constantly communicates through text, twitter, fb, etc, which in my opinion can hurt just as much as it helps a relationship. Now, I don’t advise going on group dates with one guy, but sometimes I wish dating would go back to guys asking girls out on dates with all the romantic bells and whistles. Instead, it seems like going on a date is a special treat after you’ve been texting for a few weeks or something. Dating has just been difficult for me…


In other news, today I did my first run of 2012! I covered 5.25 miles in 50 minutes on the treadmill at the gym:

  • 1.5 miles at 6.4mph
  • .5 mile at 6.0mph
  • 1.5 miles at 6.4mph
  • .5 mile at 6.0mph
  • .5 mile 6.7mph

  • total: 5.25 mph

Luckily, I hit the gym in the afternoon during the bowl game so the gym wasn’t that crowded. I also upped my pace a little to try to match my run from the other day. I think running fast on the treadmill is tougher than running fast outside.

After the run, I finally made it to the grocery store. I came home ready to chow down. I’ve been craving soup and baguettes lately…so I picked up a few cans of Amy’s Organic soups to try and a whole grain baguette with sunflower seeds in it. 

That mushy green disgusting looking soup was actually pretty good! It was the split pea soup and had 14g protein in the can, which I thought was pretty impressive for a soup! The baguette was just what my body was craving after that run.

I also ate an ungodly amount of grapes, popcorn and had a banana with several spoonfuls of PB. I honestly hadn’t eaten much these past two days out of pure laziness of not going to the grocery store, so having food in the apt again feels great and I feel refreshed 🙂

Well, 10 minutes until Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Haha…gotta enjoy my tv before classes start again tomorrow! I’m also waking up bright and early to hit a spinning class at 7am so wish me luck with that!

Happy New Year!

Yesterday was a full day, between packing my stuff, driving back to college and celebrating NYE with friends! I did manage to squeeze in a run though, and I have to say that I am very happy! I left my house, just wanting to complete 3 miles. I began running and felt GREAT! I did the first 2 miles, and once I realized my second mile was faster than my first mile, I decided to try for a 4 mile, negative split run (a run where each mile progressively is quicker than the previous). 

I have actually never tried a workout like this before. I have done my fair share of speed workouts (especially during marathon and half training). But since I got my Garmin Forerunner for xmas, I have been more aware of my pace. I always thought I was running 10 min miles outside, but yesterday I pushed myself and my avg pace was below a 9 min mile! I ended up successfully completing the 4 mile negative split run and was DRIPPING in sweat by the end! Here’s what the workout looked like:

  • Mile 1: 9:23, 158bpm
  • Mile 2: 8:44, 168bpm
  • Mile 3: 8:39, 175bpm
  • Mile 4: 8:07, 181bpm
  • Total time: 34:54, avg pace: 8:47, avg hr: 170 bpm, 381 cals burned total

I am very proud to have ended 2011 with such a great run! I killed the last mile! To be honest, this shows me that if I push myself I can actually run faster and do tougher workouts. Gives me motivation to achieve my ultimate goal of running the Boston Marathon one day!

I also must share my first meal of 2012…Panera of course! Panera is definitely one of my go-to “fast food” places. I’m not the kind of person the craves McDonalds or Wendy’s, but I LOVE Panera and Chipotle. Although there are quite a few unhealthy options at both fast food joints, I do like that they use fresh ingredients and there are definitely lots of healthy options. Today, I opted for a You Pick 2 with black bean soup (110 cals), wheat baguette (190 cals), and bbq chopped chicken salad with dressing on side (200 cals).

Asking for the dressing on the side is always a great way to reduce eating empty calories. Empty calories are calories with small nutritional value. For example, lots of dressings are full of fat and high fructose corn syrup which offer no nutritional value and aren’t very nutrient dense. There is no reason to cut these out, but just eating less is a great way lower your intake of empty calories! (A huge empty calorie culprit in the American Diet is SODA! I’m sure most people reading my blog already know that, but SODA is legit just HFCS). I guess I should address that I do drink diet soda which does have artificial sweeteners–it’s one of my vices. However, I do believe that FOR ME it is better than drinking regular soda.


All the gyms were closed today, so my first workout of 2012 was done in the comfort of my apartment. I did Amanda Russell’s “hot body workout” (see below post for link) followed by level 1 of Jillian Michael’s Shred. Pretty good workout!

Texting sucks.

And when I mean texting sucks, I mean it really sucks. For my generation, texting has become a key form of communication, lacking all the basic cues we, as human beings need, to communicate. It strips down communication to a mere screen with words scripted together. While communication is what you have to say verbally, it is also filled with non verbals and texting makes it IMPOSSIBLE to read any non verbals.

Now, I do agree that texting is great for quick messages BETWEEN FRIENDS/FAMILY like “Be there in 5.” Short. Sweet. Easy. But my generation is confusing texting with the beginning of a fucking relationship. I’ve literally been dealing with this for FIVE YEARS already. There was Jeff when I was 15-18, Nick when I was 17-NOW (This deserves a separate post), Josh when I was 19, No one when I was 20 (dry spell to the max) and then since April when I turned 21 my phone has been blowing up with me trying to decipher texts non stop. There was Andrew in April-June (I actually met him on my 21st!), Nick again in June, Evan in July, Evan in August (different Evan, but they were best friends–this deserves a post too), Paul September-Now, Phil August-Now and of course Nick again as of recent.

I will say that Andrew this past April-June exhausted me with texting. But all these text conversations were emotionally draining. Then half the time, it was awkward because I felt like I didn’t know them personally, just over text. I remember sitting upstairs with my mom reading her what Jeff was saying to me (I have a close relationship with my mom) when I was 16. It was right before Homecoming and I desperately wanted him to take me. Instead of being “me”, I was playing a mind game, trying to coin the correct response, the perfect combination of funny, cute, mysterious–OVER A TEXT MESSAGE. This happened when I was 16.

I just got fed up tonight when all my drunk friends were texting me from the bars up at the college I go to (I’m still home). Basically Paul texted me because he saw my old roommate at the bar and in her drunken state she told him to go to meet her at a bar and that he was hot. Well he started texting ME and was like “tell me about her”. Are we in fucking 8th grade? I told him if he wanted to know anything about her he needs to get his ass to the bar she’s at and work on his game and talk to her. Usually shit like this wouldn’t bother me, but tonight it was just too much. I had been texting Phil who has been bothering me about NYE and then Paul texted me ABOUT MY OLD ROOMMATE. Can’t. Deal. With. Texting. Anymore.

Do I Look Cute?

Hello Loves!

I hope everyone is enjoying the weather. In the midwest, it was warm around 45 degrees and sunny–perfect day for a run! So, despite being awoken by loud 8th grade girls during my little sister’s sleepover last night, I laced up my running shoes after I woke up and left for a run.

Since getting the Forerunner for Xmas, I can ONLY finish a run at a mile mark. This mean, you can find me running up and down my street to finish the last .05 of a mile just to make it even! Can you say OCD?

Anyways, I did 5 miles in a little under 50 minutes, which was pretty good! Here’s what my splits looked like:

  • Mile 1: 10:12, 162bpm
  • Mile 2: 9:32, 170bpm
  • Mile 3: 9:37, 166bpm
  • Mile 4:9:52, 177bpm
  • Mile 5: 9:22, 177bpm
  • Avg pace: 9:43, avg HR: 170 bpm, Total cals burned: 467

At mile 2.5, I was near my high school track so I decided to run the stadium stairs. I only did them through once, but I noted my HR throughout. I got up to 182 when I did the stairs, which I was happy about!

Okay, so the interesting encounter…as I was leaving the track and getting ready to get back to my run, I decided to walk to the road then start running again. I saw a guy running and looking at me, so naturally I looked away haha because I like to avoid eye contact with cute guys (one of my many #singlegirlproblems). Then he smiled and waved, and I realized it was one of my good guy friends from high school! He goes to a school out on the West Coast now but is home for a few weeks for Xmas vaca. He actually used to hook up with my best friend in high school….I digress. Before I go into more details, how rediculous is it that the whole time all I could think about was how upset I was that I didn’t put any make up on before my run. Inside, I was secretly praying that there was still a smudge of eyeliner lingering from the night before…

AND I’m happy to report there was clearly some eyeliner left on my right eye (so the eye on your left). Okay but anyways, after I got over the initial SHOCK of not seeing him since the day of high school graduation (literally), we got to talking. He is also a med school hopeful like me and gladly shared with me his TWO acceptances into med school for next year. I cannot begin to explain my JEALOUSY. I’m not usually a jealous person but I just want to skip over all the MCAT and application stuff and go to med school already!

After then run, I did the Amanda Russell Hot Body Workout. It’s a quick 10 minute workout but it kicked my ass!


Since I do enjoy going to Whole Paycheck Foods, I hit up the salad bar and got a late lunch. I inhaled ate it in the car on the way to the mall (note to self: work on mindful eating).

Above is mushroom and barley soup and a big mix of stuff from the salad bar. After that, I shopped for hours. Got some cute dresses at H&M, but Forever XXI disappointed me today. That store is always a hit or miss.

Emotional Peanut Allergy

Hello beauties!

Today was the first snow I’ve seen this winter. I have to admit, I’ve really been enjoying the warmer winter weather in the midwest. I’ve been able to run outside and enjoy it! But, seeing snow is always fun too! Because it was snowing, I had to take my workout indoors for the day. At home, we have a treadmill in the basement so I just run on that. I’ve been having a tougher time doing longer runs on the treadmill, so I’ve been breaking them up with walking on an incline. Believe it or not, there was a time when I was marathon training and ran 13 miles on the treadmill!

I always watch movies during my runs too. I was so excited to see that No Strings Attached got added Netflix!! I happily watched Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman during my 60 minute treadmill workout:

  • 15 min jog (5.6-6mph)
  • 5 min walk (3.7mph, 7.5%inc)
  • 5 min jog (6mph)
  • 1 min run (7mph)
  • 2 min jog (6mph)
  • 1 min run (7mph)
  • 2 min jog (6mph)
  • 30 s sprint (8mph)
  • 1:30 s jog (6mph)
  • 30 s sprint (8mph)
  • 1:30 s jog (6mph)
  • 5 min walk (3.7mph, 7.5%inc)
  • 12 min fartlek (added about 5 30s sprints at 8mph)
  • 8 min walk (3.7mph, 6.5%inc)
  • total: 60 min, a little over 5 miles

Then I did a small strength workout! At home, we also have hand weights, so I usually use those:

  • Superset 1 (w/ 10 lbs in each hand): 10 bicep curls, 10 shoulder presses x3
  • Superset 2 (w/ 5 lbs in each hand): 10 front raises, 10 side raises x2

Then I did a few planks and a small workout I found on Pinterest:

It seems small but it was actually tough! I did 10 push ups instead of 5 though! Then I snacked on my fav post workout food: fage 0%, pb and kashi cereal. So good!


Okay, now onto No Strings Attached. I can really relate to Emma, played by Natalie Portman in the movie. She is a doctor, completing her residency and has trouble with relationships. There is a particular line in the movie she says, and I am slightly ashamed to admit that not only can I relate to this line, but I’ve said some derivative of it to guys.

Adam: So what’s up with not calling me back?

Emma: I’m not good at this stuff

Adam: At what? Talking?

Emma: Yeah, talking. Communicating. Relationship stuff. If we were in a relationship I would become a weird scary version of myself. My throat starts constricting. The walls start throbbing. It’s like a peanut allergy, like an emotional peanut allergy.

I can honestly say that I don’t have any experience in relationships. I’ve dated a little but I have that problem that the instant someone starts to try to get close to me, I pull away. I tell myself that I don’t have time and find something wrong with them. I just stop talking to them lol it’s kinda bad. I have come to the conclusion that I, like Emma, have an emotional peanut allergy. Stay tuned for the treatment plan for this…. #singlegirlproblems

The Chick Flick Curse

So, it’s winter break. And by winter break, I mean time to lay around, eat holiday food and watch way too many chick flicks. I’ve watched Something Borrowed, Friends With Benefits, Serendipity, etc. I can’t say that I don’t love chick flicks, but man it makes me question why my life hasn’t played out like a chick flick yet #singlegirlproblems. Hah, but really. I guess I’ll keep spending my Friday and Saturday nights moonlighting as a cute and available girl at bars with my crazy friends until someone “snatches me up”.

In other news, as usual I did run today! Since I got a Forerunner 305 for Xmas, I’ve really enjoyed monitering my HR and pace throughout my runs! Yesterday, I ran 4 miles (avg pace 9:26, avg HR 175 bpm). Today, I ran 7 miles that looked like this:

  • Mile 1: 9:55, 165 bpm
  • Mile 2: 9:36, 177 bpm
  • Mile 3: 9:36, 177 bpm
  • Mile 4: 10:25, 176 bpm
  • Mile 5: 10:23, 178 bpm
  • Mile 6: 10:16, 179 bpm
  • Mile 7: 9:52, 176 bpm
  • Avg: 10:01, 175 bpm, total time: 1:10:06

A little slower than I wanted, but the wind was killing me during mile 4-5!

After watching all those chick flicks centered around New York, all I can daydream about is spending my twenties in NYC. The only chance I have at going to NYC after I graduate is to get into med school at a school in NYC. The only chance I have at getting into med school in NYC is getting a killer MCAT score (33+). I am still working on my 12 week study schedule, because I’m going to re-take it on March 24. I took it last year, but didn’t do so hot on verbal although my sciences were fine. Not really sure what happened, but I’m ready to study hard this quarter and get the MCAT score I deserve! So, here’s some NYC inspired musings from PINTEREST.
